Summer English Camp

Narnia or Bust! Using Narnia as a theme for the week, it was a privilege to work with the 43 students and 28 American short-termers at English Camp in Prenzlauer Berg this year. Here are some comments from Emily Rubottom, a teacher from Florida, who served as an English tutor at camp:

“English Camp 2008 provided the opportunity for me to get out of my little world and see what God is doing far away from Tallahassee. The Lord challenged me as a teacher, friend, sister, and servant of God. I pray the stretching and molding have made a lasting impact on my life.

Of all our experiences in Berlin, I will always hold most dear the blessing of spending time with the Team Berlin missionaries. I love to hear missionaries share their stories of work and life in a foreign country. Missionaries are learning to trust God in a way that I have not grasped, but I want to be like that.”

One afternoon, we brought a group of short-termers down to Altglienike, an hour’s trip from English Camp. The group was able to see the area where we work year-round, pray for the work, and meet the Scherbarths, some of our east German partners. That afternoon was an amazing time of encouragemnt for the Scherbarths, who were able to meet real-live Americans who care about this area of east Berlin, which has the reputation of being neglected.

Prayer Requests

• For the fall ministry season: pray that God will bring us in contact with people who are seeking after him through English classes and other community outreaches.

• Praise for growth and new development: the Tews will lead a new cell group starting this fall on the basic teachings of the Bible for new Christians and those we know who are curious about God throughout southeast Berlin. Pray for deep relationships and transparency, and that God will be moving in the hearts of those who are there. We plan to network the two cell groups together through kids’ programs, women’s and men’s outings, special holiday worship times, and social events. Pray for this natural growth of the church.

• For wisdom to know if our family should move closer to our ministry area. If so, for an apartment or house for rent that fits our family, budget, and ministry needs.
